Trying Something New

Hey curlfriends!

Can ya’ll believe Spring has finally graced us with it’s presence? Yesss curls, I’m so ready for warmer weather, fun outfits, and new hairstyles!

So today’s post is about this cute little shampoo massager that was gifted to me in January. I chose not to use it for shampooing, but rather as a scalp massager instead, and curlfriends, I am loving it!

Ok, so January 1st I decided to switch up my hair care routine. I felt the need to add something new. What I started doing was using the electric shampoo massager on my scalp every night before bed, then I’d follow up with my kangen beauty water and then seal the ends of my hair with my hair and body balm.

This process seems to have had a great affect on my hair, as I’ve noticed some pretty good length retention and I plan to continue this method for the remainder of the year. Now don’t get me wrong, I’ve always done scalp massages using my fingers, but just wanted to try a different approach and give my fingers a break. So be sure to check back for updates.

My overall impression, this lovely little number is quite effective in promoting healthy hair growth, it stimulates the the hair follicles and increases blood flow, now what curly girl doesn’t want that?

New Year, New Habits

Happy New Year!

It’s that time of year when folks begin pouring out their New Year’s resolutions. We’ve heard them all before right?

Well here’s one I have yet to hear, the plan to incorporate healthy hair habits. Yep that’s right, what old hair habits will be replaced with new hair habits?

While you scratch your heads and ponder on it, I’ve taken the liberty of creating a worksheet (click here: Healthy Hair Habits worksheet) designed to make it easier to track your actions.

It’s a tool I began using around year four of my natural hair journey, and it has proven to be very helpful. Give it a try and let me know what you think.

If you’re truly committed to improving the health of your hair, then you must understand and prepare to do the work.

My Hair Story

Once upon a time back in 2005 there was a long haired relaxed girl who dreamed of some day mustering up the courage to rock her curls with confidence. After five years of contemplating, some negative self talk, and watching tons of YouTube tutorials, the day finally made it’s way into her life. Oh yeah she thought, it’s about to be on! The excitement of seeing those beautiful shiny curls looking like the girls from YouTube was intoxicating and had me on cloud nine.
Sweet fantasy huh? Now let me tell what really happened after I decided to return to my roots.
None of that nonsense I fantasized about that’s for sure! I transitioned for six months and had not done my due diligence so it made it difficult to manage two textures, the new growth and the relaxed ends. What was even worse was I had no one to help or teach me about my hair. And to add fuel to the fire, my curls looked nothing like what I saw on YouTube. They were wiry, dry, coarse and tight. What had I done, I thought. Had I made a mistake? Was it too o late to turn back. I expected this to be easy. I was sooo wrong.
Shoot, as I look back, I’d been better off just cutting it down to the new growth and starting from scratch. Which is exactly what I now recommend it to anyone considering this. It can be a hard pill to swallow if you’re used to having long hair like I did, but I promise you it’s the easiest way to go. Transitioning for me, was the hardest part of going natural. I hated fighting with two textures and not knowing what to do with it. So if you’re new on the natural scene and feeling like you may not be able to do this, trust me, you can. I did it and so can you.
So after 2.5 years of natural hair hell, and no available resources within my community, I felt it was imperative that I learn how to take care of my hair.
Year 3, the struggle with tangles and a non existent routine were in full effect, and I was oblivious to the fact that water truly was my hair’s friend and not the enemy as so many curly girls had suggested. I felt my hair just wasn’t where I though it should be, especially length wise. I blame a lot of it on just not knowing those crucial things that every natural should know. Needless to say, I still had much to learn.
My natural hair aha finally occurred for me in year 4! I know right, dang it sure took its sweet time, lol.
Now I was cooking with gas, I had buried my head in so much research that I felt like I had gone back to school for another degree 😂.
But seriously though, the info I learned turned out to be my hair’s saving grace! I tell you what, the moment I put something pH balanced on my natural, oh it was on and cracking! Couldn’t tell me nothing after that.
From that moment on, I’ve made it my business to do better by my hair at each new phase of my natural hair journey. And I encourage you to do the same.
